Five years ago I was so obsessed taking pictures of horses that by the time I realized I was standing in a mound of fire ants they had bitten me senseless. I didn't want to lose the horses attention so I hopped from foot to foot and keep shooting and the picture was used in a magazine!

A million years ago I worked in a portrait studio using a large format camera. I actually went under the cloth and focused on an upside down image; that was so cool. Working in a lab developing and printing taught me how a good negative should look. Those were great experiences but I chose a well paying government job for a career. When early retirement became available I grabbed it and moved to the beach! I still love the beach but I'm really not cut out for retirement. I would rather do just about anything than watch television. Digital photography saved me from a sedetary lifestyle and opened up a whole new world.

Today photography for me is equal parts creative fulfillment and problem solving. In a perfect world there would be awesome light, a crisp blue sky with perhaps a few pure white clouds and very little wind. OK, there would also be rare birds posing and fire ants would not exist! Back in the real world the challenge is to work around the imperfections until I'm satisfied that the final image is my best effort.
